Why learn from an American Canoe Association Pro Instructor?
Last summer, three kayakers at Lake Guntersville headed out on a beautiful summer day. The wind was about 8-10 mph at launch. All wearing life jackets (smart), they headed into the wind towards the Lake Guntersville Campground. As they passed a set of steel boat slips, the father fell over. Although they were close to shore, the boat slips (with fishermen) were blocking their way. Additionally, the winds by that time were pushing the boat and swimmer directly towards the boat docks. The mother and son had no idea how to help their father, and he did not have the skills to rescue himself. One of our ACA Pro Instructors noticed their predicament and headed out to help. She quickly did a T-rescue, only to have the father topple over once more. By then, I went to assist, and between the two of us, we t-rescued once again, and as I rafted with the father in his boat, the second instructor towed us safely away from the boat docks.
My question is this–what if the two ACA instructors weren’t there to assist? Quite possibly, this family could have been in a very dangerous situation, at the very least it would have made for a miserable afternoon outing.
Being prepared to rescue yourself and others is a necessity. Alabama weather especially, like most places, can change on a dime. A bright afternoon can turn into choppy waves and storms in an instant. Becoming a confident kayaker is much more than learning how to paddle, instead it is knowing what elements are essential in planning a successful kayaking trip–float plans, communication equipment, rescue gear, rescue skills, knowing your fellow paddlers’ skills, reading the weather, water, waves, and wind (the 4 W’s!), and much, much more. Learning all these from an ACA Pro Instructor in a Safety and Rescue Class is not only imperative but amazingly confidence building.
ACA curriculum and classes are peer reviewed and tested by some of the best kayakers on the planet. Certified instructors are put through rigorous courses and tests to qualify to teach. Unphiltered kayaking has two Level 2 Coastal Kayaking Instructors who LOVE to kayak, LOVE to teach, and LOVE to ensure your safety. Come have fun with us, and the next time one of your fellow paddlers (or you) gets dumped by the wind, you will be the one completing a successful T-rescue and saving the day!
The goal of Unphiltered Kayaking is not just fun trips, but creating safe and skilled kayakers in North Alabama. We highly encourage people to take our Safety and Rescue Course, WOWW course (for women only!), and our SAW course (this goes from basic skills to advanced in a two day weekend!). Unphiltered Kayaking is the only outfitter in North Alabama with two ACA pro instructors on staff. We often have guest ACA pro instructors join us from all over the Eastern United States which only adds to the fun and knowledge learned. Watch our calendar, visit the pro instruction page on this website, call us for more information, and live to paddle another day!
